What screams summer fun more then pretzels. There are so many ways and variations that you can do with a pretzel dough. I do not think that you can go to any theme park, fair, circus or outdoor activity where you cannot find at least one version of this salty treat.
Did you know that Pretzels, somewhat surprisingly, got their start in the Catholic Church. Sometime around the 7th Century A.D., monks presented their students with treats of baked dough twisted in the shape of crossed arms. At the time, crossing one’s arms was the traditional posture for prayer. Not only that, but pretzels, made from water, flour and salt, were also the perfect food for Lent — when meat, dairy and eggs were prohibited. Here is The National Pretzel Day Timeline.
One thing I like most about Pretzels is that they fit great into a Circus themed party. I really enjoyed when my kids were little making an entire birthday party in my backyard where I had games, snacks and lots of fun..but most of all I really enjoyed making a pretzel bar that my kiddos could top their own Pretzels with whatever we wanted. Pizza Pretzels were a family favorite. Check out Facebook for a recipe to make your own Pretzels at home.
